He began composing his Second Symphony there in the summer of 1872\, completing it later that year. Audiences loved it from the very first\, but Tchaikovsky was dissatisfied\, calling the first movement “difficult\, noisy\, disjointed and confused.” He revised the symphony extensively seven years later. Both Tchaikovsky and his audiences loved the new version\, which we will play for you\, amongst others\, on February 28 (excerpt from the program notes by Pat Bronte). \nThe CBASO and CBA Chorus in Concert\, under the direction of CBASO Music Director Jennifer Huang and featuring CBA Choral Director candidate Kirsten Hedegaard\,includes Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2\, Music by Mozart\, Schubert\, Nicolai\, and more. Saturday\, February 28 7:30 pm St. James CathedralLink to tickets: https://www.cbafeb26.eventbrite.com/ \n\n\n\nKIRSTEN HEDEGAARD\, CBA Chorus Director Finalist \nKirsten Hedegaard has enjoyed a varied career as a singer\, conductor\, and scholar. As a soprano\, she has appeared as soloist and ensemble member with groups across the country\, including Philharmonia Baroque\, Mercury Baroque\, Ensemble viii\, Baroque Band\, Schola Antiqua\, Newberry Consort\, Ars Antiqua\, Rook Ensemble\, Bella Voce\, Callipygian Players\, Elgin Symphony\, Elgin Master Chorale\, and eighth blackbird. \nCurrently Director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Loyola University and Director of Music at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington\, Hedegaard has conducted choirs and orchestras for various institutions. Most recently\, Hedegaard founded Vox Madonna\, a professional chamber choir dedicated to exploring important sacred choral works from an historical perspective. \nHedegaard’s ongoing research on music and environmental activism has led to the recent formation of the New Earth Ensemble\, a chamber ensemble committed to performing and commissioning new works that support ecological awareness. As a co-founder of The EcoVoice Project\, Hedegaard is interested in bringing together musicians and artists to explore how the arts can support environmental education and action. In addition to leading performances and community events through The EcoVoice Project\, Hedegaard continues to present workshops and lectures on this topic throughout North America and abroad. \n\n\n\nJENNIFER HUANG\, CBASO Music Director \nJennifer Huang is a Taiwanese-American conductor currently serving as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Northwestern Medical Orchestra. Her most recent engagements include Music Director of the Merit School of Music Chamber Orchestra\, Music Director of Thompson Street Opera Co.\, and Associate Conductor of the Chicago City-Wide Symphony Orchestra. Before moving to Chicago in 2021\, Huang worked with several ensembles in the Bay Area\, serving as Resident Conductor of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra\, Music Director of the Santa Rosa Symphony Aspirante Youth Orchestra\, Music Director of the UCB Summer and Chamber Orchestras\, and Assistant Conductor and Chorus Director of West Edge Opera. \nWhile the majority of her work focuses on standard orchestral repertoire\, Huang is also an active opera conductor and a strong advocate for new music performance\, working closely with composers from around the world. An accomplished violinist\, pianist\, and vocalist\, Huang has performed under the baton of world-class artists such as Riccardo Muti\, Esa-Pekka Salonen\, Gustavo Dudamel\, and David Robertson. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of California Berkeley in Molecular Cell Biology and Music\, as well as a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern Bienen School of Music. \n\n\n\nThe Chicago Bar Association Symphony Orchestra and CBA Chorus\, guest choirs and soloists perform Jamie Wind Whitmarsh’s new edition of Handel’s Halleliuah Chorus at Chicago’s Symphony Center\, June 2019\, David (Volosin) Katz\, CBASO founding music director\, conducting.
