Twenty-five years ago chef Anthony Barbanente opened a trattoria on Halsted Street and wrote the night’s dishes on a chalkboard. The chalkboard is gone, the plates are still enormous, and from Tuesday, Nov. 10, through Sunday, Nov. 15, 2026, Sapori Trattoria throws a week-long birthday party at 2701 N. Halsted St. in Lincoln Park. It opens with house-made tiramisu for $2.50, steps back to early-days dishes and prices midweek, and pours free bubbles on the weekend.
All week, every plate of bucatini carbonara sends $5 to Dignity Diner, the Lincoln Park nonprofit that serves free weekly community meals to neighbors facing financial or housing insecurity. Regular tables book on OpenTable, and the dining room is open Tuesday through Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m.

Sapori Trattoria Chicago’s anniversary week, night by night
Tuesday, Nov. 10, is for dessert people. The kitchen’s classic tiramisu, espresso and liqueur-soaked ladyfingers layered with mascarpone and finished with cocoa, costs $2.50 for that one night only. Come early, split a bottle of red and save the tiramisu for last.

Wednesday, Nov. 11, turns back the clock. Sapori serves dishes and prices drawn from its first years on Halsted, a menu that nods to the chalkboard era when the kitchen rewrote the list as the evening went on. If you have been coming since the early 2000s, this is your night; if you are new, it is a delicious crash course in the restaurant’s history.
Friday, Nov. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 14, every guest 21 and over gets a complimentary pour of bubbles, a toast to the room and the regulars who filled it. Reserve ahead for the weekend.
Sunday, Nov. 15, closes the party with the Best of Sapori dinner at 6:30 p.m., a $150 multi-course menu of signature dishes from all 25 years with wine pairings. Every ticket has sold, and the regular menu runs as usual through the rest of the week.
The carbonara that feeds the neighborhood
The dish to order this week is the bucatini carbonara ($32): thick hollow noodles in a sauce of pancetta, smoked bacon, onion, cream, egg yolk and Grana Padano. From Nov. 10 to 15, $5 from every plate goes to Dignity Diner, which sets a free table for Lincoln Park neighbors every week. It is a rich bowl with a generous finish, and one of the restaurant’s longtime favorites.

Twenty-five years on Halsted: from a chalkboard to a neighborhood institution
Barbanente opened Sapori in 2001, cooking from recipes and techniques he picked up during years on his grandfather’s farm in Italy. In 2003 the restaurant came close to closing, and the regulars who kept coming back carried it through. Over the next two decades it became a Lincoln Park go-to for heaping plates of Italian comfort food and the pasta order you never change.
In 2020 restaurateur Kosti Demos, a longtime fan, took over with executive chef and partner Saul Ramos. Ramos was born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, raised in Chicago, and started in restaurants at 13, bussing tables and helping in the kitchen. He helped launch Siena Tavern in River North, where he fell for Italian cooking. At Sapori he keeps Barbanente’s family recipes on the menu, recreates requested dishes from the original handwritten recipe cards, and adds a rotating selection of house-made pastas. When Time Out Chicago asked the city’s chefs for an Italian guide in October 2026, Ramos was one of them.
Regulars know about the off-menu list. Ask for chicken limone, bucatini arrabbiata or zuppa di mare and the kitchen will make them, and a vegetable lasagna is available with 24 hours’ notice.
What to order at Sapori Trattoria Chicago
Start the way most tables do, with bruschetta ($10) for the middle of the table, crisp calamari fritti with marinara and pickled peppers ($19), or Calabrian clams in white wine with garlic chips and pancetta ($22). The burrata platter ($22) comes with prosciutto di Parma, grilled bread and roasted tomato relish, and the vitello meatballs ($15) arrive in marinara with ricotta and basil.
Pasta is the heart of the menu. Pasta Contadino ($28) tosses orecchiette with prosciutto sausage, arugula, broccolini, truffle honey and pecorino. Ravioli di zucca ($28) is filled with pumpkin and butternut squash under butter and sage. Cappellacci all’aragosta ($35) is stuffed with lobster in vodka sauce, spaghetti allo scoglio ($35) is loaded with shrimp, mussels and scallops in garlic tomato sauce, and the lasagna di carne ($30) stacks meat sauce, béchamel and four cheeses.

For mains, the short rib ($38) braises for six hours and lands on whipped potatoes with crispy shallots, the herb-crusted Chilean sea bass ($46) comes with preserved lemon, and pollo Ternana ($29) is a chicken breast stuffed with smoked provolone and basil. Finish with tiramisu or the fall pumpkin brûlée, baked inside a mini pumpkin and cracked open with a spoon.

Where you will sit: four rooms, one long Lincoln Park night
Sapori sits on Halsted Street at Diversey Parkway, a short walk from the Diversey Brown Line stop. The main floor has a front room and a back room, and upstairs the Gallery Room and the Rustico Room host rehearsal dinners, birthdays and team dinners, with full buyouts available. Parties of six or more get a 20% gratuity added. If the anniversary week puts you in a Halsted Street mood, The Bull Moose serves dry-aged steaks a short walk south at 2020 N. Halsted, and Osteria Gilberto brings a second, newer Italian table to Lincoln Park. November is full of one-night dinners across the city, and Sapori’s anniversary week adds a run of special nights close to home.
